Sep 15 - Nov 17 Quarters for Quantum
Quarters for Quantum has kicked off once again! The canister campaign, sponsored by Panera Bread Company, is the largest community project at the House and depends solely on volunteers for its success. Businesses, schools, civic groups, and individuals register for canisters which they spend the next four months filling up with spare change and donations they raise themselves. The funds raised go towards providing families with lodging, care, and compassion while their child receives treatment locally. Quantum House is the only one of our kind between Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, which makes our mission even more critical. Register for yours at www.quantumhouse.org/q4q or donate to our digital canister at www.quantumhouse.org/digitalcanister. This fundraisers ends Monday, November 17 so sign up now!

Oct 20 PegLeg Art Show
Vault 39 Wine Bar features local artist and half-price champagne! The artist, Geoff Comfort, began doodling with a 59-cent pen. He would draw lighthouses and seascapes on regular notebook paper. When his wife finally bought him a few colored felt tip pens, the rest is history! Froggie was his first. From there he could not get them onto the canvas fast enough. His mediums are as varied and unique as he is. Sometimes he uses just an ink pen or colored markers, and at times he even uses whiteout alongside his acrylics. He?ll use whatever is at hand that will give him the effect he is looking for. Geoff gets his inspiration from surfing and the beauty that surrounds him. He started surfing at age 4, and in 1962 they were building surfboards in their living room with Ron DiMenna, who we all know now as Ron Jon! He became known as the PegLeg Surfer after waking up from a motorcycle accident in 1977 with no right leg. He is proud to brand his work as PegLeg Surf Art.

Oct 21 - Oct 24 Prinicpal for a Day presented by the Education & Life Science Committee
Click here for Principal for a Day materials.

Be part of the “Principal for a Day” program, brought to you by the Education & Life Science Committee of the Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce. Sign up to learn more about what happens in our schools every day.  Fill the shoes of one of our North Area principals and get ‘up close and personal’ with education!

WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A GUEST PRINCIPAL?

The primary purpose for a business leader to become a guest principal is to experience the issues that a principal faces on a daily basis. Your visit will result in a higher level of awareness and will help strengthen business-education partnerships. You will participate in everything from bus duty, meetings with parents, teachers or student government, to cafeteria duty, observing a class in progress or addressing issues with students.
Guidelines for getting the most out of your day:
 Ask the principal for an agenda and review it before arriving at school.
 Ask to observe a class in progress.
 Ask the principal how the school prepares students with the soft skills (punctuality, attendance, appropriate dress, teamwork, etc.) they need to be successful in the workplace. Share with the principal the critical skills that you need in an employee.
 Ask to speak with teachers and/or address the student body or other student groups.
 Ask the principal how the business community could most help the school.
 Talk about standards and the effect of the new state testing program at the classroom level.
 Ask the principal how resources are used to raise student achievement.
 Ask about the constraints and regulations that a principal must observe, such as student safety and disability accommodations.
 Ask to spend some time in the school cafeteria to talk with students.
 Share with the principal the problems you face in hiring and retaining quality employees.

THE CANDIDATES
Congressman Patrick E. Murphy
Congressman Patrick E. Murphy represents Florida’s 18th Congressional district, which includes Martin, St. Lucie, and northern Palm Beach counties.  A CPA and small businessman, he has put forward several proposals to cut hundreds of billions of dollars in wasteful government spending and create an environment conducive to spurring economic growth. For his support of common sense, pro-growth policies, Murphy was endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- only one of six Democrats nationwide to receive the honor.  And as a native Floridian, Murphy understands the importance of protecting the environment to our way of life and local economy, and has been a staunch advocate for protecting our local waterways.

Carl Domino
Carl Domino knows the value and rewards of hard work and the gift of the American Dream.  He is running for U.S. Congress in Florida’s 18th district so he can fight to preserve the American Dream for future generations, a dream he has been blessed to have lived.
Carl worked and paid his way through college and is a graduate of Florida State University. He completed active duty service as a Naval Officer in Vietnam and then earned his M.B.A. from Harvard University. Carl served and retired as a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Carl is a long term Jupiter resident.  Carl built a successful company from scratch in Palm Beach County. After many years of hard work, the company achieved success, and at one time Carl was handling assets in excess of $3 billion. Carl eventually sold this company, and began building another investment management company in the area, creating more jobs and opportunity for his neighbors in the Palm Beach Treasure Coast region.

In 2002, Carl was elected to the Florida House of Representatives and served for eight years. Carl held a number of important roles in the State House and was best known for his property tax reduction proposal called "portability," which enabled local homeowners to move to newer properties without losing the property tax benefits of the home they left. Carl was also the only elected official to use his own research, and stand firm against Governor Crist and the Florida Legislature to prevent the taxpayer giveaway to Digital Domain fiasco in St. Lucie County. Despite huge pressure from state and local officials and the media, Carl stood firm, but Digital Domain prevailed. Not too long after, Digital Domain failed costing the State and St Lucie County taxpayers many lost jobs and over $20 million in state tax dollars.
Carl resides in Jupiter with his wife Sharon and teen age twins Reagan and Mason.

He is a member of several local and national business groups, local charities and philanthropic organizations.

Oct 24 - Oct 26 Ballet Palm Beach Presents Giselle

Ballet Palm Beach Opens Season with

Sunday, October 26, 2014 – 4:00pm

Eissey Campus Theatre
At Palm Beach State College
11051 Campus Drive, Palm Beach Gardens

Tickets at balletpalmbeach.org or 561.207.5900

Palm Beach Gardens, FL – Ballet Palm Beach opens its season Friday, October 24th and Sunday, October 26th with the romantic masterpiece, Giselle. Since its Paris premiere in 1841, Giselle has become one of the most popular ballets of all time. Through stunning classical dance and music by Adolphe Adam, the ballet takes the audience through the emotions of romance, betrayal, and then forgiveness. It is a story of a young peasant girl, Giselle, who is seduced and betrayed by a prince named Albrecht. The betrayed Giselle goes mad and dies of a broken heart. Her spirit joins the supernatural Wilis; women scorned before their wedding day and doomed to take their revenge for eternity. In the end, Giselle forgives Albrecht and protects him from the vengeful Wilis.

Giselle is one of the greatest ballet classics; always evolving and giving something new to the audience.” said ballet mistress Claudia Cravey. “The role of Giselle requires brilliant dance technique. The dancer must transform from a naive peasant girl, experiencing the emotions of love, betrayal, and insanity, into an ethereal spirit. That’s a lot of emotions!”

Lily Ojea and Rogelio Corrales will dance the roles of Giselle and Albrecht. Other key roles include Myrta, the unrelenting Queen of the Wilis played by Madeleine Miller; and Hilarion, the suspicious gamekeeper played by Marshall Levin. Tickets begin at $15 and can be purchased at balletpalmbeach.org or at the Eissey Campus Theatre box office at 561.207.5900.
